Dietary supplements
In 1994, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education
Act which defines dietary supplements as being a pill, liquid, powder
or capsule intended to supply nutrients that would normally be absent
(due to allergies or convictions).
Dietary supplements can include:
• Vitamins
• Minerals
• Herbs
• Amino acids
Although the law did a fine job of defining what dietary supplements
are, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate them (confirm
if they work), as they do with prescription drugs. The FDA will only
step in if vitamins, etc. prove to be hazardous after they’re
on the market.
