Natural supplements
In 1994, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education
Act which defines natural supplements as being pills, liquids, powders
or capsules that are intended to supply nutrients that would normally
be absent (due to allergies or convictions).
Natural supplements are available in almost every health-food or grocery
store due to the popularity of holistic alternatives to prescription
drugs. By FDA standards, however, they cannot claim (advertise on the
bottle) to cure, mitigate or treat any serious diseases.
Although they can’t cure diseases, natural supplements can supply
much-needed nutrients for those with dietary restrictions. For example
a lactose-intolerant person can get their recommended calcium intake
without having to consume milk or cheese.
